Int, November 2009: Dominicon

With seconds to spare until Dominicon 2009 (in space!), Shane, Dave, humbug and Liam examine what's on offer at the end of the train line.

1750 point games are used to allow lots and lots of stuff but to avoid letting the highest-level stuff in. It makes things more tactical and less about lord Fancypants of Snobbington beating everyone to death with his heirloom sword of Shiney Death and Mutilation.

Didn't make it out to Dominicon in the end unfortunately. Did anyone get out there?

I headed out there after work on the Friday night, and arrived too late for the RPGs, which were actually all full and running and the place was somewhat hopping, which was deadly to see because I wasn't quite expecting it to be busy. They only had weekend tickets but let me hang around for free so long as I didn't partake of the facilities. I bought a copy of Power Grid at the trade stand, and some d20s to match my 3:16 d10s, for use in Twilight: 2013 because they're militaristic-looking. Then I played Carcassonne with Hugh and Gar which was okay because it was Hugh's own copy and not a facility. Then they were going to the pub so an obliging conperson looked up the choo-choo times for me and I ran almost the entire way from the con (which I only found by pure coincidence of arriving at the same time as Cillian who knew where he was going; no signposting) to the choo-choo station and barely made it in time.

To be honest I wasn't expecting much from it due to the lack of publicity, but it was actually a pleasant surprise. Decent amount of space, looked like a definite zone was set aside for the con (as in, one floor of a building or at least one identifiable section) so you're either in the con or out, no grey areas. Dedicated rooms for board games and wargames and RPGs and all, movies being screened and video games to be played. I was a bit sorry I was missing the rest of it actually.

Good work Dominicon (I'm extrapolating)! More PR though.

Oh I forgot about the movies. Yeah, any time I've been out to Dominicon it's been great. Good to hear it seemed to be going well. Anyone make it for the whole weekend?
