Per, November 2009: Military Simulation airsoft

Postby Shane on Tue Nov 24, 2009 12:13 pm

Units of toy soldiers skirmish over imaginary battlefields, complete with advanced rules for firefights, objectives, intelligence, explosives and even airstrikes. The unusual part is that this time, the toy soldier is you. Shane, Dave and humbug meet with a sniffly DoC from the Irish Airsoft Association to take a look at running about for wagamers.

Seriously, does nobody else play airsoft? It's deadly. I mean, good.

Must get back into at some point. No sense in letting that full steel/wood AK47 go to waste

I would love to play Airsoft.

I tried Skirmish once, and it was a blast, despite being butchered by the regulars.

Unfortunately, being a pennyless student, I can't afford to invest in YetAnotherPriceyHobby.

Tis the problem alright but you don't have to go OTT like some of the guys. I've just got camo and a rifle with no further plans to buy anything (except perhaps spare magazines which are resonably cheap). You can pick up a rifle fairly cheap either second hand or going for a lower range model. Camo is nice but you don't REALLY need it. Can be handy for some scenarios as you might say green camo versus grey camo. There is also the advantage of blending in with the background.

But boy oh boy, going OTT is great. Pokemon for grown-ups. As soon as you have everything you need to dress up like a soldier, you realise you don't have stuff to dress like a cop, or a gangster, or a World War II soldier.

There's a day of no-fee airsoft happening after Christmas to give the likes of you a chance to give it another go. Rentals and ammo and such aren't included in the free, but it sure takes a chunk out of the price. National Get Out and Skirmish Day, the 29th of December.

Pokemon IS for grownups....

Might have to see about organising a group for free airsoft day then.

Or a desert soldier, or an urban soldier, or multi-terrain soldier ...
And then there's all the different guns and bits for sticking onto guns, and bits for holding bits for sticking onto guns when they're not stuck onto your gun but you dont want to leave them behind

oh and grenades
